Griensteidl Cafe was opened by Heinrich Griensteidl in 1846 on the Michaeler Square right across from the Hofburg and the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. In 1848 it temporarily adopted the name of "National Cafe". Soon after its opening it became the favourite meeting place of illustrious personalities of Viennese cultural life. 'At the Black Camel' is a Viennese institution that's been around since 1618. It is a combination of deli/sandwich shop and highbrow wine bar. The best and cheapest way of experiencing it is to have a selection of the open face sandwiches and a glass of wine or champagne while standing in the middle of the crowded deli.
